The Season of Bad Weather

Hello. It’s been a while! I have just arrived back from a camp in Sunshine Village in Alberta where we were doing a bit of year-end training to finish off the season. I drove out there from Whistler with a few audiobooks and the Taylor Swift album to keep me entertained. Side note: Tina Fey’s book “Bossypants” is worth a read or listen as I did!

Season Highlights for me:

It was a tough season to say the least. I made mistakes that kept me out of the final races several times, but overcame my issues mid season in Sochi, Russia. I went into Russia open-minded and when the weather turned sour I was unfazed. The course was really fun and one of the best we saw the whole season. Big jumps and new and exciting features made everyone come down with a smile on their face. I finished second in Sochi to Kelsey (my teammate) and on the men’s side Chris Del Bosco and Tristan Tafel both placed well with second and fifth respectively. It was a great feeling knowing that I could nail the course with less than a year to the Olympic Winter Games.

After Russia we went to Harrachov, Czech Republic where there were some challenges with the course, but in the end it was the weather that did the race in. Prior to World Championships in Voss, Norway the Canadian team went to Mittenwald, Germany for a training/racing camp. The course was small, but had a big field including many World Cup athletes. I got my confidence back here with two wins. I was feeling confident and happy with my skiing going into World Championships which is exactly where I was hoping to be.

At World Championships the weather was amazing which was a relief since the World Cup ski cross circuit has had many challenges in that department this season. I enjoyed the course; there were decent-sized jumps, fun bank turns, and speedy roller sections. The opinions on the course varied as they do at most stops, but I continue to say I liked it although the lack of passing opportunities proved to be a challenge. On the race day I was feeling pretty confident after two awesome training days. I qualified well coming fourth which was a nice change from the beginning of the season proving to myself that I am still one of the top athletes in the sport. During the race I improved on my starts and stayed strong on my skis in each round. Prior to the final I had a moment in the start gate and thought of my late teammate Nik who passed away a year ago to the date of this race. I realized I had to calm myself down and not get caught up in the emotions of it all. The finals went well and I came home with a silver medal. I was close to Fanny Smith (who won) the entirety of the finals, but couldn’t quite make the pass to capture the win.

After Voss the tour moved along to Are, Sweden. Having only been to one mountain in Sweden (Branas) it was nice to go somewhere new. The course that was built for us was not super challenging, but the jumps and interesting start features proved to be fun. On the first day of races I made it to the semi finals and had a ski pop off as I landed off a jump (I was in second at that point) which sent me into the small finals. In the small finals I led the whole way and came fifth! On day two of racing I was determined to make it into the final and made sure my bindings weren’t going to fail me. I finished in second and won the two day prize as I was the best overall finisher over the two races. I won a pretty cool watch and a BIG cheque!

Going into World Cup finals in Sierra Nevada I was on a serious streak and I my confidence was high. The course was one of the best we had seen all year with HUGE jumps and fast speeds. I was having a lot of fun every run down the course. Since Sierra Nevada is high in the mountains and above tree line the weather is very unpredictable and we were playing a waiting game for the morning of the race day. The fog rolled in and nothing was getting rid of it, so our last race of the year was cancelled. Thanks to Audi we did have a fun party to put a cap on the year and enjoy the last moments with our friends/competitors.

Since I am the only U21 athlete on the Canadian Team I made my way to Italy to the World Junior Championships right after Sierra Nevada. I met the Swiss coach Adi in Zurich and he and I made a road trip to Valmalenco, Italy. In Italy I met Drew and Stanley with the joint BC/Alberta junior ski cross team and joined them at the accommodation. The course in Valmalenco was fun with a pretty strong field for a Junior race. We had two days of training to get the course and features dialled and I was feeling confident on the race day. In qualifying I was really happy with my run as I had no major mistakes. I was 1st! During the race I made it through my first two heats with the other girls hot on my tails. When the fog rolled in I was optimistic that we would finish the race, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. The race was concluded based on the first two rounds of competition in combination with qualifying times. Since I did so well in qualifying I became the Junior World Champion!!

That’s my season. Big thank you for this season to my sponsors: PI Financial, Stoeckli, Uvex, Dalbello, and Brian at Top Shelf in Whistler (for the relentless hours spent fiddling with my boots)! Thank you to Audi for providing me with my current car. I love it!

If you have made it this far… Thanks for reading and I hope you continue to follow me. I will try to be more committed to my blog in the future.

Fantastic training camp in Nakiska

Greetings from the Calgary Airport!

After a great camp in Nakiska I can’t wait to get back to the World Cup circuit and to racing. All of the training I have done this off season is truly paying off and I am feeling fast out of the gate and strong on my skis. Our first few days were spent doing lead follow amongst the team which was definitely productive and tested our drafting skills. Once the initial few days were over my coaches and one of the groomers worked tirelessly into the evening to make a start that we could practice our start skills on that we have been developing over the summer. My last day on snow was by far the best with me leaving the camp feeling super positive and excited for the season. Soon we will be reconvening in Nakiska again for the World Cup opener with all of the ladies and men of the ski cross world.

I have just put the PI Financial logo on my last year’s helmet… Still waiting on my new set up from Uvex, but I wanted to represent my sponsor in my current training until my new helmet arrives. Big thanks to PI Financial in supporting me!

Since arriving back from Saas Fee I have received my new Audi! I am so grateful that as the top female on the Canadian Ski Cross Team from last year I get my own brand new 2013 Audi A4 Sedan. A HUGE thanks to Audi Canada and for my new box and rack from Thule Canada. My brother Broderick was on picture-taking duty so here are a few shots:

I will be in Whistler for the next ten days for a little recuperation and working out in preparation for the first race.

Until we meet again,

MT

Wind, wind, go away and don’t ever come back please!

Guten morgen. Since arriving in Saas Fee we have had a few great days of training on the ski cross track along with the past two days of weather holds due to wind. Since the top of the Saas Fee glacier is so high up it often gets much harsher weather than down here in the valley. We have been playing lots of cards to pass the time.

Cards and team bonding with the ladies! Photo: Georgia Simmerling

Since we didn’t ski yesterday our trainer Craig had us doing some speed, agility, and balance in the parking lot. Kelsey took a nice shot of Cathy, Georgia, and me.

In the first few successful days we had up on the glacier I had the opportunity to start running in my new Stoeckli skis over jumps and through berms and I loved them. I’m very excited to have made the switch!

Off to Switzerland tomorrow!

Hallo welt (practicing my German!)

We will be crossing the big pond over to Europe tomorrow because it’s time to train on a real ski cross track in Saas Fee, Switzerland. I’m REALLY excited to try out my new Stoeckli skis and see how they run! It’s been great training in Whistler for the past month; gymnastics twice a week and getting my legs ready for some real skiing with strength and power endurance workouts. Below is the trick I landed on the last day of gymnastics. Our coaches Karen and Tami thought it would be fun for me to learn a different way to do a basic front flip.

Check out the video: Russian Front Flip

In September there were some beautiful warm nights when a few of us would go for a casual disc golf. Kelsey Serwa and Stan Rey took some fun photos!

Time to get back to packing. I will be sure to update after I get to ski!

Mount Hood – Back to Basics

‘Drills, drills, and more drills.’ If anyone were to ask me what we did at this summer ski camp that’s what I would answer. After eight days on snow I’ve been doing it all; GS gates, drills, freeskiing, lots of start training, and a few jumps in the terrain park. Our first four days on snow were filled with lots of drills with no poles that our coach Willy changed up from run to run to keep things fresh. For dryland we did a few bike rides on the awesome trails around Government Camp and Sandy which were really fun! Craig our dryland coach likes to change things up so we did a pool workout where we were jumping up and down, treading water, and generally looking like synchronized swimmers… too bad I forgot my swim cap and goggles for this camp.

Beautiful Day at Mount Hood

It’s been great to have the whole ladies team back including Kelsey Serwa and Ashleigh McIvor who are back from injuries and looking strong. This entire camp for me was about improving my skiing skills and getting out of my comfort zone. Yesterday was our last day and my starts felt fast and strong. I can’t wait to get back on a ski cross track in Saas Fee, Switzerland at our next camp in October and start hitting some more jumps!

Beautiful day in the office

Whitecaps in Portland. Go Caps!

A few of us were lucky and got to go attend a Whitecaps game in Portland with Ashleigh. The fans were crazy and we really got into cheering!

Ominous clouds

Our last couple of days of the camp it started to get a foggy and cold. Hopefully it gets back to beautiful clear skies for the rest of the guys’ camp! Time for my last glimpse of summer here in Whistler.

Crystal Globe

When the team and I left Sweden we headed to Grindelwald, Switzerland for the final two races of the season. For the qualifying for the first race I had a great run and was skiing really well. I won my first qualifying run on the World Cup ever which was very exciting for me.

The tourism bureau of Grindelwald treated us athletes to a 100 metre freefall swing which was exhilarating and really got the adrenaline going.

On race day it was beautiful with blue skies and lots of sunshine. The first few mens heats went off without a hitch. Unfortunately my teammate Nik had an accident in the finish of this heat and we were stuck in the start not really sure how severe his injuries were. Nik passed away and was unable to be resuscitated at the scene. It’s been tough, but we were able to stick together as a team. He died doing what he loved and Nik’s father reassured our team that Nik would’ve wanted us to keep racing. Nik will always be in our minds and hearts.

The second race in Grindelwald was cancelled, but we got out on the course in our blue jeans and race tops with all of the other teams. It was great to have the ski cross community support each other and come together as one for Nik. Below is a video my teammate Tristan and I put together. Nik did his first World Cup at Cypress Mountain in blue jeans because he thought they would be fast (which they were) so we thought it would be a good tribute to the “King of Toronto”.

One Last Run for Nik

After I learned of Nik’s passing I decided to head back home to Canada before I was meant to. I was supposed to go to Valmalenco, Italy for World Junior Championships, but under the circumstances I decided to come home. At dinner the night before we left Switzerland the Overall Crystal Globe was handed to me by my coach Eric Archer. I’m proud to be the first Canadian Ski Cross athlete to ever win a Crystal Globe. My teammate Brady was second in the overall and we as a team won the Nations Cup for the fourth year in a row… all for Nik. Miss you Nik!

Coming home we had some time off before heading to Nationals in Nakiska, Alberta. It was nice to chill out a bit and have some time to relax. At Nationals there were lots of younger athletes coming out to race which is awesome. I had the support of my dad Rod and my sister Tess who haven’t had the opportunity to come out to many of my races! It was a pretty good course that Nakiska built and I was glad to be able to race. I won Nationals and the younger girls were hot on my heels which is great to see!

Getting some big air at Nationals!

That’s all for now!

Leader Bib!

Ahoy! Just chillaxing in Sweden waiting for those slowpoke guys to finish watching sports (what’s new right?) so we can drive to Oslo, Norway. These last few weeks have gone by in a flash! We started out the trip in Bischofswiesen, Germany. The first race I made lots of mistakes in my qualifying run so I didn’t end up qualifying for the race. I won the first split time so that was encouraging though. My teammate Tristan Tafel won his first World Cup and got his first podium (very exciting to watch) while Chris Del Bosco was third. It was a good day for Canada with two podiums and I’m glad I got to cheer them on! In the second race I was determined to get back on the horse and even though I made a few mistakes I qualified and made it into the race. I ended up placing third behind Katrin Mueller (1st) and Ophelie David (2nd). I made a big mistake which allowed Ophelie to pass me.

Here in Branas , Sweden I had an awesome qualifying run (one hundredth off of Katrin Mueller of Switzerland) which allowed me to have first gate choice until the final. In each heat I was on fire! I was first to the first turn and lead the whole way down. In an exciting final with the ladies battling it out behind me Katrin ended up doing a 360 off a jump (not on purpose) among other interesting racing tactics haha. Most importantly I received the red leader bib after winning the race!!! It was very exciting! Great time in Sweden :)

Mid Season Adventures

Oh hello there! Wow what a busy season it’s been. After the first two World Cup races in Italy I headed back to Canada for Christmas with my family and friends. Whistler Blackcomb had some great skiing so I was a happy girl! After Christmas we flew back to Europe for more racing. The first race was in St. Johann, Austria. It’s a really fun place to race because so many people come out to support and cheer us on as well as it being a night race… people tend to party it up and get a little wild. Austrians sure do love ski racing! I had an okay race making it to the small finals, but ended up 8th due to a tangle up off the first jump.

View from the bottom of St Johann, Austria. Night racing is fun!

Kelsey and I prior to racing in St Johann, Austria

After St. Johann we drove to Alpe d’Huez, France. The course in Alpe d’Huez was super fun with lots of speed and many features. It made for a great race! I was skiing really well on race day and made it to the finals. I finished 2nd behind Switzerland’s Sanna Luedi!! It was an awesome feeling being on the podium again so early in the season! Unfortunately my teammate Kelsey Serwa had a bad crash off a jump in the final and tore her knee and is now out for the remainder of the season. Get well soon Kels!

Yay! 2nd place! Here with teammate Mariannick and our team massage therapist Cathy.

From Alpe d’Huez we drove across France to Les Contamines with a quick McDonald’s stop on the way (McDonald’s in France is probably better than North America I recommend it!) The course in Les Contamines was fairly similar to last year with one addition… ICE!! The course workers water injected several of the turns so the course would stay in good shape for the race day and first day of training I was like Bambi on ice. I got my act together for the qualifying and had a career best of third! The race didn’t go as well as it could’ve. I made small finals, but unfortunately my ski popped off when I was leading the heat going into the first turn so I finished 8th! From Les Contamines we flew home for a quick break before the North Amercian leg of the season.

Bib Draw - 10th Anniversary of Les Contamines Ski Cross

X Games is an amazing event with a great course and huge features held in Aspen, Colorado. The builders spend many hours pushing around snow to make it perfect. It’s much longer than our World Cup courses clocking in around a minute thirty seconds… very tiring on the legs! X games is different than World Cup, instead of 4 people on course it is made more exciting with 6! On the day of the race I was skiing well and was confident with the course. I won the semi-finals and made it to the finals. In the finals I was in second going into a jump and the Norwegian girl in front of me lost some speed from missing her landing so I was able to make a pass. While I was in front I came into a bank turn and got compressed by the G forces and had a crash and got passed. I ended up 5th, but was definitely disappointed with my result.

The X Games start taken on my GoPro

Tristan Tafel showing his X for X Games on the chair. See the X in the sky too?

From Aspen drove to Denver to fly to Toronto for the next World Cup at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ontario. Since I didn’t get to participate last year I was really excited to race in front of the Canadian crowd! Before we began racing we (my teammates and I) went and visited elementary schools in Collingwood. It was an awesome experience having all of those kids so excited to meet us and wanting autographs. At Blue I qualified 2nd (BEST EVER!) so I had a good spot heading into the heats. On the day of the finals I sailed through all three heats to take my first World Cup WIN!! It was a great feeling heading over the last jump and hearing the home crowd cheering for Canada! Chris Del Bosco won the men’s and Brady Leman was second. Overall it was a great day for Canada!

Chris, Brady, and I with our team mascot "Helmut" after the great day at Blue!

From Blue Mountain a slightly diminished team headed to Park City, Utah to compete in the US Grand Prix Ski Cross at the Canyons Resort. The course had a very technical start which several of the girls were unable to do, but my teammate Georgia and I made it up no problem! The rest of the course was really fun with a BIG hip jump halfway down the course and lots of other features. In the semifinals my teammate Georgia had a big crash and ended up breaking bones in her thoracic spine and neck. Get well soon Georgia!! In the finals of the race I was winning heading into the hip jump, but got pushed too far left to hit it so I ended up taking the alternate route. Katrin Mueller the Swiss girl who was second didn’t hit the jump well so I ended up staying in front and winning the race!!

My teammate Mariannick and I at the finish at Blue Mountain Photo: Ken Edwards

Overall it has been an amazing season and I hope to keep the ball rolling heading back to Europe next week. For now though it’s time to kick back and relax here in Whistler.

Later gators!
